
Can You Actually Get More Out of Your Old Blow Molder Just by Swapping Lamps?
Ever feel like your production line has hit a wall? You’ve got the demand, you’ve got the preforms, but the oven just can’t keep up. It’s frustrating. Usually, when this happens, the first instinct is to just crank up the voltage. We see it all the time. But here’s the problem: that doesn’t actually fix the heat—it just fries your filaments faster. You’re not gaining speed; you’re just buying more replacement parts. The real issue is usually the IR emitters. They just aren’t pushing enough heat into the plastic.
The “Secret” to Faster Heating
To get more bottles per hour, you have to move more energy into that PET preform in a shorter window of time. Standard quartz lamps are fine when they’re new, but they get tired. Their emission spectrum shifts as they age, and they lose their punch. If you swap those out for high-density IR lamps—the kind built for Krones-style setups—the math changes. These lamps use short-wave radiation. It sounds technical, but all it really means is the heat penetrates deeper and faster. You don’t have to slow down the conveyor just to make sure the plastic is heated evenly. It just works.
Will It Actually Fit?
Nobody wants to spend a weekend rewiring an oven. That’s why we make these as drop-in replacements. Whether you’re using R7s or Sk15 connectors, they fit your existing sockets perfectly. You just pop the old ones out and slide the new ones in. Easy. But, a quick word of caution: if you jump to a higher wattage to boost your throughput, check your power supply. A 2500W tube pulls a lot more current than a 1500W one. If your wiring is old or your contactors are worn out, you’ll get voltage drops. And that’s a quick way to kill a brand-new lamp.
The Catch: Don’t Forget the Air
Here is the thing. More heat means more bottles per minute, but it also means your cooling fans have to work harder. If you upgrade the lamps but ignore the airflow, you’re asking for trouble. We’ve seen plenty of shops where the lamps performed beautifully, but the machine kept tripping on over-temp alarms. Why? Because the reflector housings were baking. Before you go full throttle on the wattage, make sure your CFM (airflow) can handle the extra thermal load. Keep it balanced, and you’re golden.
