Getting Heat Where it Actually Matters in Husky HyPET Systems
If you’ve spent any time with high-speed blowing, you know the struggle. You’re trying to get heat deep into the center of a thick-walled PET preform, but the surface is already starting to scorch. It’s a constant balancing act. For those of us working with Husky HyPET systems, the secret isn’t just “more heat”—it’s about the kind of heat. We focus on the spectral output of the IR lamp. If the energy isn’t tuned right, it just bounces off the plastic or burns the outside, leaving you with a “cold core.” That’s a nightmare. You end up with a bottle where the walls are uneven because the inside was still too rigid to stretch properly. Tuning the heat We don’t just throw any bulb in there. We use specific quartz blends and halogen cycles to shift the emission peak. Think of it like tuning a radio to the exact frequency PET likes to absorb. By tweaking the filament temperature and the tube diameter, we make sure the energy actually sinks into the polymer. Dealing with the heat load When you’re running high-speed lines, you need a massive amount of energy, and you need it fast. We spec our tubes for high wattage over short lengths. It means your ramp-up time is quick, which keeps your cycle times where they need to be. But here’s the catch: that much power creates a lot of heat. You’ve got to make sure your oven’s airflow and cooling fans are actually doing their job. If the cooling system can’t pull the heat away from the lamp ends, your filaments are going to burn out way sooner than they should. Making it fit There’s nothing worse than a replacement part that “almost” fits. We build our lamps to match Husky OEM specs exactly. We use precision-ground ends and standard connectors, so they just slide right into the racks. It sounds minor, but it’s huge. If a lamp is off by even a few millimeters, it throws off the focal point. Suddenly, you’ve got cold spots in your preform and you’re chasing your tail trying to figure out why. These lamps are built to take a beating. They handle the thermal shock of rapid cycling in 24/7 production environments without flinching. They push the quartz to the limit, but that’s what it takes to get the penetration you need for high-grammage PET.
