If you’re running an older SIG Blomax 4, 6, or 8, you’ve probably hit that wall where you just can’t squeeze any more bottles out of the machine. It’s frustrating. You start looking at the motor or the molds, thinking that’s where the problem is. But here’s the thing: most of the time, the bottleneck is actually the oven. When your lamps get old, they lose their punch. Swapping them out for precision infrared elements is often the fastest way to win back your cycle time.
It’s All About Heat Density
To move faster, you have to get that PET preform hot—and fast—without actually scorching the plastic. It comes down to the wattage-to-length ratio. Higher watt density means the preform spends less time lounging in the oven. But a word of caution: if you crank up the wattage to push your speed, you’ve got to make sure your cooling blowers are clean. If those vents can’t dump the extra heat, you’ll start seeing the preform necks deform. Not a good look.
The Nitty-Gritty on Quartz and Coatings
We use heavy-wall quartz glass because it doesn’t burn out nearly as fast. These lamps use short-wave infrared radiation, which basically cuts right through the PET wall instead of just heating the surface. Depending on the color of your preform, a coated tube can be a lifesaver. It bounces the heat back toward the plastic and keeps it away from your machine frame. And don’t worry about the fit. We keep the footprints exactly the same as the OEM SIG specs. You just drop them in. No rewiring the cabinet, no hacking the lamp holders. Simple.
A Few Tips for the Install
When you’re wiring these in, take a second to really check those contact pins. If there’s oxidation, you’ll get arcing, and that’ll kill the ends of your lamps pretty quickly. Also, resist the urge to just swap one or two dead tubes. It’s tempting, I know. But mixing old and new lamps creates “hot spots” and “cold spots.” That’s how you end up with thin, weak spots in the base of your bottles. Just replace the whole set. One last thing: check your voltage stability before you flip the switch. A sudden spike can fry a high-output halogen element in a heartbeat. Keep it steady, and these things will last.
