When we’re building infrared lamps for bathrooms, there’s a tricky balance to strike. It’s not just about cranking up the heat—it’s about the light. Think about it. In a bathroom, you’re usually standing right under the heater. If you’re bathing a baby or just stepping out of the shower, the last thing you want is a blinding glare that makes you squint or stresses your eyes.
Fixing the Glare
Standard halogen tubes are a bit like a firehose; they blast out every frequency, including a lot of visible light and near-infrared rays that can feel harsh. To fix this, we tweak the emission. We use special quartz coatings or specific gas mixes inside the tube to shift that peak energy. It basically dials down the blue light and softens the glow. You still get all that cozy warmth, but without the feeling that you’re staring into a spotlights.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Heat
We use quartz envelopes because they heat up almost instantly. No waiting around in a cold room. We usually keep the wattage between 250W and 600W. Why? Because we want a steady warmth, not “hot spots” that might actually sting your skin. The shape of the reflector matters just as much as the bulb itself. We use parabolic aluminum reflectors to push the heat down in a controlled cone. It keeps the energy focused where you need it and keeps the light out of your eyes.
The Trade-offs
Look, nothing is perfect. By filtering the light to save your eyes, we lose a tiny bit of that raw power you’d find in an industrial lamp. You won’t get that searing, instant heat used to dry paint in a factory. But for a bathroom? You don’t want that. You want a gentle, sustained warmth that feels natural. One last tip: if you’re installing these in a ceiling or a pergola, double-check your seals. These filaments hate moisture. Keep the housing airtight and make sure the driver has room to breathe so it doesn’t overheat.
