
Stop Fighting Your SACMI Oven: Getting Your Response Times Right
If you’re running SACMI rotary blow molding machines, you know they move fast. Really fast. In those cycles, you only have a tiny window to get that PET preform heated up. If your lamps are lagging or jumping around in temperature, you’re going to see it in your product. You get thin walls in some spots, burst bottles in others, and a whole lot of frustration.
Why Speed Actually Matters
To keep up with a SACMI line, you can’t mess around with slow heating. That’s why we stick with shortwave infrared. Think of it like this: medium-wave lamps take their time to warm up. Shortwave? They hit full power almost the second you flip the switch. We use high-density tungsten filaments and a halogen gas fill to make this happen. The halogen does the heavy lifting here—it stops the filament from evaporating too quickly, so you can crank up the heat without the lamp burning out in a week.
Getting the Fit Right
It’s all about the balance between voltage and wattage. When we build a replacement for a SACMI machine, we look closely at the quartz envelope. We use a thinner, high-purity quartz because it lets the heat jump from the lamp to the PET much faster. And please, don’t overlook the connectors. We use R7s or SK15 because they actually stay tight. A loose connection is a nightmare—it creates resistance, causes voltage drops, and leaves you with uneven heating across the oven. You need a steady stream of power if you want that “instant-on” feel.
The Trade-Offs (The Stuff No One Tells You)
Here’s the thing: when you run high-wattage, fast-response lamps, you’re putting a lot of stress on your power supply. If you push for maximum heat density just to shave a couple of seconds off your cycle, you have to watch your cooling fans. If the fans aren’t up to the task, the heat builds up around the lamp holders and starts eating away at your wiring insulation. It’s a slow burn, but it’ll get you eventually.
