Why infrared actually works
Here is the thing about standard heaters: they warm up the air. But warm air is lazy—it just floats straight to the ceiling. So, while your ceiling is toasty, your feet are still freezing. Infrared is different. It doesn’t bother with the air. It sends out heat in a straight line that hits you directly. It’s like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a winter day. You feel the warmth the second you step out of the shower. No waiting around for the room to warm up.
The “Waterproof” Part
In a bathroom, you can’t just trust a “water-resistant” label. You need a high IP rating. Think of it as a shield. Cheap heaters let steam seep in, which is a recipe for disaster. When a tiny drop of cold water hits a scorching hot quartz tube, the glass can literally crack from the shock. We use sealed gaskets and tempered glass to keep that moisture out. It keeps the electrical guts dry and the heating element safe, so the unit doesn’t give up on you after a few months of heavy steam.
The Reality of Installing Them
Now, these aren’t “plug and play.” You can’t just jam them into a standard GFI outlet if you want them to really put out some heat. You’ll need a dedicated circuit. Also, keep in mind that these things put out a lot of concentrated heat. You just have to make sure your ceiling material can handle the warmth gathering around the unit. Yeah, they cost more than those old bulbs. You’re paying for the better seals and the tech inside. But you aren’t replacing them every single season. It’s just a steady, reliable heat that doesn’t quit just because the room is foggy.
