
Keeping Your Bathroom Heater Safe (And Your Toes Dry)
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing around. It’s the perfect recipe for a short circuit. When we build these things, we obsess over two spots: the lamp housing and where the wires connect. If those aren’t right, you’ve got a problem.
Making Sure Nothing Leaks
We don’t just hope for the best. We use IP-rated enclosures and materials that simply won’t conduct electricity to keep the live parts isolated. Standard quartz tubes are a bit too fragile for us—if the shell cracks, you’re in trouble. That’s why we go with high-grade tempered glass or special coatings. It acts like a shield. Then there’s the wiring. No open wires here. We run everything through sealed conduits and use terminal blocks that lock out moisture. If a drop of water hits a live terminal, it’s game over. To stop that, we use silicone gaskets or potting compounds to seal every single entry point. Tight. Secure. Safe.
Grounding: Your Safety Net
A heater is only as good as its ground. We run reinforced earth grounding across the whole chassis. Why? Because if the insulation ever fails, we want the power to trip the RCD (Residual Current Device) instantly. It’s much better for the power to cut out than for the wall—or you—to become electrified. We push these units to the limit, testing for leakage current in crazy high humidity. Just a heads-up: make sure your home circuit has a 30mA RCD. If your building’s wiring is ancient, even the best heater needs that extra layer of protection.
The Trade-off
Here’s the thing. When you seal a heater completely to keep water out, the heat has nowhere to go. It gets hot. Really hot. Since we can’t just poke vent holes in it (because then the steam gets in), we use heat-conductive alloys for the casing. This pulls the heat away from the internal wires so they don’t melt, but it means the outside of the unit stays hot to the touch. Because of that, don’t mount it where someone can accidentally lean against it. Put it up high. Your skin will thank you.
