
Getting Your Sidel SBO Lamps Right
Let’s be honest: replacing heater lamps in a Sidel SBO line is usually a headache. You’re stuck staring at strict OEM specs, wondering if a replacement will actually work or just blow a fuse. We decided to fix that. We built our infrared lamps to be true drop-in replacements. They fit over 95% of the blowing equipment out there because we didn’t just guess at the “compatibility”—we matched the exact electrical and thermal footprint of the original tubes. It just works.
The Trick to the Heat
When you’re blowing PET, you need that shortwave infrared radiation to punch through the preform wall fast. You want the inside hot without melting the surface into a mess. To make that happen, we use high-purity quartz glass and halogen gas. It lets us crank up the wattage density. Whether you’re running a 250W or 500W tube, the filament hits that sweet spot where IR emission is at its peak. But here is the catch:you have to get the voltage right. If your lamp’s voltage is lower than your power supply, that filament is going to burn out in a few hours. On the flip side, if the voltage is too high, your preforms won’t get enough heat. That’s how you end up with bottles that have uneven walls.
Built for the Grind
We stick with R7s and Sk15 connectors. They’re the old reliable of the industry for a reason—they handle the constant expanding and contracting of the heat without losing their grip. We also coated the quartz envelope to push the heat forward into the preform. It keeps the oven housing from soaking up all that energy, which keeps the whole system running cooler. These tubes are designed for 24/7 production. We spent a lot of time on the seal between the electrode and the quartz. Why? Because if oxygen leaks in, the filament oxidizes and the lamp pops. It’s a small detail, but it’s the difference between a week of uptime and a midnight emergency repair.
A Couple of Pro Tips
These lamps put out a massive amount of heat. They slide right into place where the OEM parts were, but you should probably double-check your cooling blowers. High-output lamps make the inside of the oven a lot hotter. If your cooling system is clogged or just too weak, you might actually warp your lamp holders. **Keep it simple:**wire them up tight, keep your reflectors sparkling clean, and your heat distribution will stay exactly where it needs to be.
